Two officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have been shot and injured in an ambush at Nagani in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region. The incident occurred late Sunday night, November 2, while the officers were returning home after their night shift.
According to sources within the GIS regional command, the officers were riding a motorbike when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them.
“The assailants laid an ambush and shot at the unsuspecting officers,” one source revealed, adding that both men sustained serious injuries.
The victims were rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, where they are receiving emergency treatment. Though the Service has not yet released an official statement, internal sources say an investigation has been launched to identify and arrest the attackers.
The latest assault adds to a worrying rise in violent attacks targeting immigration officers in Ghana’s northern regions. Only weeks ago, two GIS personnel were attacked at an inland checkpoint in Gbintiri. In that incident, Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II) Rafiq Mohammed was killed instantly, while his colleague, AICO II Oppong Daniel, sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized.
Investigators recovered an AK-47 cartridge and a GIS service weapon with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646 from that scene.
These recurring attacks have heightened concerns about the safety of immigration officers operating along Ghana’s borders, where they continue to face increasing risks in the line of duty.
