Ghana’s international merchandise trade performance in 2025 showed significant growth, with exports far outpacing imports to deliver a record trade surplus, according to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The 2025 Annual International Merchandise Trade Statistics Report revealed that total trade stood at GH¢654.7 billion (US$52.5 billion). Exports amounted to GH¢401.5 billion (US$32.0 billion), while imports reached GH¢253.2 billion (US$20.5 billion). This resulted in a surplus of GH¢148.3 billion (US$11.5 billion), more than three times the surplus recorded in 2024.
Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, noted that the figures reflect Ghana’s strengthened export base and improved trade balance, underscoring the importance of sustaining policies that enhance competitiveness in global markets.
The report highlights Ghana’s resilience in navigating global economic pressures, with the surplus expected to ease pressure on the cedi, support fiscal stability, and boost investor confidence. Analysts say the performance provides government with fiscal space to pursue growth-oriented interventions while safeguarding macroeconomic stability.
The GSS emphasized that continued monitoring of trade flows will be critical to sustaining the gains, particularly in light of fluctuating commodity prices and global supply chain dynamics.
