Roman Abramovich’s assets frozen. How does it affect Chelsea?

The United Kingdom government on Thursday morning announced that it had sanctioned Roman Abramovich and 6 other Russian Oligarchs.

Among businesses affected by this is Chelsea FC. This has left many football fans unclear about the ramifications this has on the club.

Although the club has been sanctioned, the government has issued a license to the club so the club functions. The license takes effect on 10 March 2022 and expires on 31 May 2022. The statement said the license may be revoked or suspended at any time.

The sanction means Chelsea F.C cannot

  • Sell further tickets to home and away fans
  • Season ticket remains valid
  • Sell merchandise
  • No transfers
  • No contract renewals

The club, in relation to this, has released a statement. In this statement the club says it intends to engage with the UK Government regarding the scope of the license. It added “ this will include seeking permission for the license to be amended in order to operate as normal as possible.”

The Premier League in a statement said “the league will now work with the club and the Government to ensure the season will proceed as planned in line with the Government’s intention.”

The statement also confirmed Chelsea’s game against Norwich tonight will go ahead as planned.
