Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has inaugurated a 13-member Committee of Inquiry to investigate the causes of Ghana’s recent spate of deadly building collapses, describing them as “failures of systems, processes, oversight and accountability.”
Speaking at the Ministry of the Interior, the Minister stressed that the probe must go beyond structural defects to examine defective construction materials, design deficiencies, construction malpractice, environmental degradation, climate-related factors, human negligence, and institutional lapses.
“The collapse of a building is not merely a structural failure. It is often a failure of systems, processes, oversight and accountability. We owe it to the victims and future generations to ensure that the lessons from these incidents lead to meaningful reforms,” Hon. Muntaka stated.
He charged the Committee to work with professionalism, independence, and integrity, producing evidence-based recommendations that can be implemented to strengthen regulatory oversight, improve enforcement mechanisms, and enhance community resilience.
The Minister also called on institutions, professional bodies, developers, property owners, and communities to cooperate fully, warning that the era of impunity for unsafe buildings is over.
Brigadier General B. F. Kusi, Chairman of the Committee, thanked the Minister for the confidence reposed in them and assured that their work would serve as a blueprint for safer construction practices in Ghana.
