Health Minister Announces Completion of 13,500 Nurse and Midwife Recruitment

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the successful completion of the recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives, a milestone aimed at stabilising the country’s health workforce.

Delivering a speech at the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) 19th Biennial Conference in Tamale, the Minister disclosed that all newly engaged personnel who experienced salary delays will receive their payments by the end of the month.

He explained that the recruitment forms part of government’s broader strategy to strengthen frontline healthcare delivery, particularly under the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Cares programmes. Hon. Akandoh underscored that nurses and midwives remain central to the success of these reforms, serving as the backbone of community-level health services.

The Minister further highlighted government’s consideration of the negotiated Conditions of Service for inclusion in the 2026 Budget, describing it as a clear demonstration of commitment to improving the welfare of health workers. He also announced that promotions for nurses and midwives have now been regularised, eliminating delays previously caused by limited vacancies.

Hon. Akandoh called for sustained collaboration between the Ministry, labour institutions, and the GRNMA to address deployment challenges, expand specialist training, and ensure overall workforce stability. He stressed that strong partnerships remain essential to advancing quality healthcare across the country.
