Parliament has paid glowing tribute to the late Paramount Chief of the Tolon Traditional Area, Naa Yab Tolon Naa Sulemana Abukari, following his passing.
The tributes were delivered on the floor of the House after the First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, made a statement announcing the demise of the revered traditional leader.
Hon. Iddrisu described the late chief as a “national hero, military veteran and committed advocate for peace, justice and constitutional rule.” He noted that Naa Sulemana Abukari dedicated his life to serving his people and safeguarding the traditions of the Tolon Traditional Area. His traditional title, Toblan Kpemma, meaning “Commander of the Dagban Army,” reflected his courage and determination to fight injustice, corruption, and land grabbing.
Born in July 1943 at Tali, the late chief was widely respected for his principled stand on constitutional governance during Ghana’s political upheavals of 1979 and 1981 — a position that eventually led to his exile in 1982.
Members from both sides of the House joined in celebrating his legacy, describing him as a symbol of resilience and a custodian of Dagbon’s heritage. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Tolon Traditional Council and the family in due course.
