Firefighters from the Accra City Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) last night battled a heavy blaze at the Accra Water Works, opposite the Accra Central Police Station, following a distress call received at 8:05 p.m.
The first crew arrived within two minutes to find the fire fully developed. Reinforcements from the Ministries, Parliament, Industrial Area, and Circle Fire Stations, supported by a water tanker from the Assembly, joined the operation.
By 10:29 p.m., the fire was confined, brought under control at 11:50 p.m., and fully extinguished at 3:41 a.m. No fatalities were recorded. However, one firefighter sustained critical injuries during the operation and was rushed to the Police Hospital. He is reported to be in stable condition and responding well to treatment.
The blaze extensively damaged the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex, destroying thirty-two rooms and their contents, as well as a one-storey building. Despite the intensity of the fire, GNFS crews successfully prevented its spread to the nearby Ghana Water Limited facility and adjoining structures, averting further losses.
Authorities say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
