Sulemana Abdul‑Samed, affectionately called Awuche and widely recognized as Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the age of 33.
He passed away in the early hours of Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been undergoing care after his condition worsened due to complications linked to gigantism.
Standing at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres), Awuche’s extraordinary stature made him a household name across the country.
A relative confirmed the sad news to Graphic Online, adding that arrangements were underway to lay him to rest in Tamale in line with Islamic rites.
Originally from Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, Awuche first sought medical attention at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before being referred to TTH for advanced treatment.

His health challenges drew nationwide concern, prompting appeals for financial assistance. Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama later assumed responsibility for his medical bills at TTH and pledged to facilitate overseas treatment if necessary.
On July 11, 2026, Mr. Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, disclosed that doctors at TTH had reviewed Awuche’s case and ruled out the earlier recommendation from BMC to amputate his left leg. He reaffirmed Mr. Mahama’s commitment to covering all medical costs.
Background
Awuche’s towering height earned him recognition as Ghana’s tallest man and made him a familiar figure wherever he appeared. His family explained that he was not born with the condition but began growing abnormally at a young age, later diagnosed as gigantism.
His passing has evoked sorrow among relatives, friends, and the wider public, with tributes flooding social media in remembrance of his unique presence and remarkable life.
