The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has pledged to intensify advocacy and public education to help reduce HIV/AIDS prevalence in the metropolis.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Metropolitan AIDS Committee, the Mayor described current statistics as worrying and called for collective action, particularly through educating young people and promoting awareness.
According to the Ghana AIDS Commission, the Ashanti Region recorded 2,852 new HIV infections in 2025, the second-highest in Ghana after Greater Accra. Kumasi alone accounted for an estimated 7,582 cases and 267 new infections.
Hon. Agyemang urged residents to break the stigma, promote testing, and work towards a healthier, HIV-free Kumasi. “Together, we can change the narrative,” he said, stressing the importance of community involvement in prevention and treatment efforts.
The Metropolitan AIDS Committee is expected to spearhead coordinated interventions, strengthen partnerships with health institutions, and mobilize public support to curb the spread of HIV in Kumasi.
