The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed a fatal road accident at Asikuma Junction in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, resulting in five deaths.
According to GNFS, the crash involved nine individuals. Four survivors, including a child, were rescued and transported to the Peki Government Hospital by the National Ambulance Service.
Tragically, five others were found unresponsive at the scene and handed over to the police for further procedures.
A statement posted on GNFS’s official Facebook page revealed that the Peki Fire Station received an emergency call about the incident and promptly dispatched a rescue team.
The accident involved two vehicles: a grey Toyota Noah with registration number GX 422-25 and a tipper truck bearing registration number GT 725-19.
GNFS praised the coordinated efforts between its personnel, the National Ambulance Service, and the police, which facilitated a swift and effective rescue operation.
Between January and June 2025, Ghana recorded 7,289 road traffic accidents, resulting in 1,504 fatalities, according to preliminary data from the National Road Safety Authority (NSRA) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
The report also indicated that 12,354 vehicles were involved in these incidents, with 8,300 individuals sustaining injuries. Additionally, 1,301 pedestrians were struck during this period.
The NSRA emphasized the alarming daily averages:
8 fatalities from road crashes,
40 accidents nationwide,
46 injuries,
69 vehicles and motorcycles involved.
The authority has renewed its appeal for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased public education to help reverse the growing trend of road-related tragedies
