The Government of Ghana has successfully evacuated 150 additional nationals fleeing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, bringing the total number of returnees since May 2026 to 1,324.
The evacuees arrived at the Accra International Airport on Monday and were received by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP), alongside senior officials of the Ministry and other government representatives.
Welcoming the returnees, Hon. Quayson expressed gratitude to God for their safe arrival and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring their smooth reintegration. He urged them to remain hopeful and to channel the skills, resilience, and determination acquired in South Africa into rebuilding their lives and contributing to Ghana’s national development.
The Deputy Minister cautioned against harbouring resentment, stressing that South Africans remain “brothers and sisters within the larger African family.” He underscored the importance of African unity and peaceful coexistence, encouraging the evacuees to embrace opportunities available to them in Ghana.
Hon. Quayson reiterated Government’s dedication to the welfare and safety of every Ghanaian, emphasizing that “human life remains invaluable.” He assured the evacuees of continued support under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, including resettlement packages and livelihood assistance.
As part of reintegration measures, the Deputy Minister announced that evacuees’ details would be compiled and categorised according to their skills and aspirations to enable targeted employment support. He further disclosed that Government had approved a reintegration cash grant to assist them in restarting their lives. He expressed appreciation to AirtelTigo and Telecel Ghana for providing free mobile connectivity to facilitate communication and reintegration.
Speaking on behalf of the evacuees, Mr. Phillip expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Mahama, the Government of Ghana, and stakeholders including Amb. Benjamin Quashie, Ghana’s High Commissioner in Pretoria, religious leaders, and other partners for their role in ensuring a safe evacuation and warm reception.
Representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross, and Port Health authorities were present to provide logistical and medical support, ensuring a smooth transition for the returnees.
This latest evacuation underscores Ghana’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad and supporting their reintegration at home.
