The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has announced that it will begin strict enforcement of the National Vehicle Homologation and Conformity Assessment Programme from October 1, 2026, to ensure all vehicles imported, assembled or manufactured in Ghana meet national safety, quality and environmental standards.
The programme, according to the Authority, is designed to prevent the influx of substandard and environmentally harmful vehicles into the country. It requires that all new vehicle manufacturers, assemblers, importers and distributors have their vehicles homologated by the GSA before sale or registration.
Officials explained that homologation involves rigorous testing and certification to confirm that vehicles comply with Ghana’s regulatory requirements. The initiative is expected to improve road safety, reduce environmental pollution and protect consumers from unsafe vehicles.
The Authority emphasised that beginning October, vehicles that fail to meet the standards will not be cleared for sale or registration. Importers and distributors have therefore been advised to work closely with the GSA’s Vehicle Homologation Unit to ensure compliance.
The notice further urged stakeholders in the automotive industry to support the programme, describing it as a critical step towards building a safer, cleaner and more sustainable transport system in Ghana.
