Parliament has approved the Maritime and Related Offences Bill, 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening Ghana’s legal framework for maritime security and regulation.
The legislation, passed during Tuesday’s sitting, seeks to address gaps in existing laws by introducing stricter measures against offences such as piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and other unlawful activities within Ghana’s territorial waters. It also provides for enhanced cooperation between national agencies and international partners to safeguard maritime trade routes and protect the country’s coastal resources.
Officials say the Bill will empower enforcement agencies to respond more effectively to emerging threats in the maritime sector, while ensuring compliance with international conventions. The passage of the Bill is expected to bolster Ghana’s standing as a responsible maritime nation and contribute to regional security efforts across the Gulf of Guinea.
The Media Relations Department of Parliament described the move as “a milestone in protecting national interests and ensuring safe navigation for all stakeholders in the maritime industry.”
