The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the commencement of Ghana Card registration for Ghanaian children aged 6 to 14 years in the Northern Region, beginning Thursday, June 11, 2026.
The exercise, undertaken in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), follows successful phases in the Volta and Oti Regions, where mop-up operations are currently underway to capture children who missed the initial registration.
According to the NIA, registration teams will visit both public and private schools daily between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to ensure extensive coverage. Children outside the school system may register at designated centres or nearby schools.
Parents and guardians are required to present valid identification documents, including a Birth Certificate, Ghanaian Passport, or Certificate of Acquired Citizenship. In cases where these are unavailable, an Oath of Identity form may be completed by a parent, relative, or legal guardian. For children without known relatives, two Social Welfare Officers may vouch under oath.
The Authority further encourages parents to provide the child’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card or number where available. Persons presenting children must themselves be Ghanaian, at least 18 years old, of sound mind, and in possession of a valid Ghana Card.
The NIA has urged parents, guardians, school authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders in the Northern Region to support the exercise. It cautioned that providing false information or facilitating the registration of non-Ghanaians constitutes an offence punishable by law.
Reaffirming its commitment, the NIA stated that the initiative is part of efforts to build a secure, inclusive, and reliable national identity system “that ensures every eligible Ghanaian is recognised, protected, and counted.”
