The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) on Thursday launched the National Horticultural Seed Roadmap, a strategic document expected to reshape the country’s horticultural seed sector over the next three to five years.
The launch, held in Accra, brought together key players in agriculture, including government officials, seed industry actors, researchers, farmer groups and development partners, all united by a common goal — putting quality seeds and seedlings within reach of Ghanaian farmers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Setor Dumelo, described the Roadmap as a critical milestone in the country’s agricultural transformation agenda, noting that it would help build a seed system that truly responds to the needs of farmers on the ground.
According to officials, the Roadmap will guide implementation around four key priority areas:
- Strengthening local seed production and enterprises;
- Improving farmers’ access to quality seeds and seedlings;
- Supporting the development of crop varieties suited to Ghanaian conditions; and
- Establishing clear responsibilities, timelines and financing arrangements to ensure accountability.
Ghana’s development partners also threw their weight behind the initiative. The Netherlands Embassy, represented by Madam Inge Tenniglo, reaffirmed the country’s continued support for Ghana’s horticultural seed sector, saying the Roadmap was “laying the foundation for the future of Ghana’s horticulture sector.”
Agricultural stakeholders have long identified poor access to improved seeds and planting materials as a major bottleneck limiting productivity in the horticulture sub-sector, which includes vegetables, fruits and ornamental crops.
With the new Roadmap now in place, MoFA says it is committed to working closely with all stakeholders — from local seed producers to international partners — to ensure the strategy translates into real gains for farmers across the country.
The Ministry has assured the public that further details on implementation timelines and funding arrangements will be communicated in due course.
