Education Ministry Reaffirms Commitment to SHS Development as SOSSEC Celebrates 60 Years

The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening secondary education and improving school infrastructure across the country as Somè Senior High School (SOSSEC) celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, delivered the message through his Technical Advisor, Prof. George Oduro, at the school’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.

In an address marking the milestone, the Minister congratulated the chiefs and people of the Somè Traditional Area, the school’s Governing Board, management, staff, students and alumni for their contributions to education and community development over the past six decades.

He acknowledged the significant role the school has played in shaping generations of students in the Ketu South Municipality and beyond.

A key highlight of the address was the disclosure that the Ministry had received a petition from the Somè Traditional Council requesting an upgrade of SOSSEC from a Category C to a Category B school.

According to the Minister, the request would be given serious consideration under the World Bank-supported US$300 million Secondary Education Improvement Project (STARR-J), which is expected to support the expansion of educational infrastructure and facilities in senior high schools across the country.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the Minister stressed the need to instill discipline, integrity and good character in students, describing these values as essential components of quality education.

He urged teachers and school heads to remain vigilant in protecting students and reporting any form of misconduct, particularly cases involving sexual indiscipline.

The Minister warned that neither the Ministry of Education nor the Ghana Education Service would shield any teacher found culpable of such offences.

He also called on alumni, traditional authorities and parents to continue supporting the growth and development of the school, while encouraging students to embrace hard work, respect their teachers and make responsible use of digital learning tools.

The celebration brought together education stakeholders, traditional leaders, old students and community members to reflect on the school’s achievements and chart a course for its future development.
