Ghana Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has identified the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign as the immediate priority for the Black Stars, while situating the team’s new cycle within a broader project aimed at building a side capable of “honouring” the country at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to the Ghana Football Association’s official website, Queiroz stressed the need for “absolute determination and humility” as the team embarks on its next chapter. “Hands on the present, eyes on the future. The priority is very clear: absolute focus on AFCON qualification, with our eyes set on the 2030 World Cup,” he said.
The Portuguese tactician cautioned against premature expectations, noting that ambition must be balanced with realism. “We cannot talk about winning AFCON when we have not yet qualified. We have to work, grow, compete and earn our destiny,” he emphasized.
Queiroz acknowledged the competitive strength of Africa’s leading national teams, many of which boast players established in Europe’s top leagues. He said Ghana must recognize this reality and strive to reach that level. Reflecting on the 2026 World Cup, he described the experience as invaluable in deepening his understanding of the squad’s qualities and character.
On squad selection, Queiroz explained that technical staff had conducted in‑depth monitoring, with readiness and competitive activity serving as key criteria. “Players should be in competitive action, physically prepared and fully ready to play for the national team,” he noted.
The coach concluded with a message of resolve: “If we want to compete with the best, it is not enough to work as hard as they do. We have to work even harder and better. That is the best way to turn into reality the great dreams and ambitions we all have for the Ghana national team.”
