President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate formation of an inter‑agency task force to combat narcotic trafficking through Ghana’s ports and borders, following an urgent meeting with national security chiefs at the Jubilee House on Thursday.
The high‑level meeting was convened in response to recent cases of drug smuggling linked to Ghana’s maritime and land entry points. According to the Presidency, ten individuals are currently in custody, including four officers from the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), as investigations intensify.
The deliberations reviewed existing security structures and identified weaknesses in monitoring systems at the country’s ports. President Mahama tasked the newly constituted task force to present a detailed roadmap within two weeks, outlining measures to strengthen border controls and prevent future breaches.
“The government will not tolerate any compromise in the fight against narcotics,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the administration’s resolve to safeguard Ghana’s reputation and protect its citizens from the dangers of drug trafficking.
The press release, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, reaffirmed that the Presidency is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in border security operations.
