The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed GH¢1.2 billion in claims to credentialled healthcare providers across the country, covering the first half of 2026.
Deputy Chief Executive for Finance and Investments, Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobiri (Esq.), announced the achievement at a staff durbar held at the Authority’s Head Office in Accra. She described prompt claims payments as the cornerstone of NHIA’s operations, emphasizing that the practice will be sustained to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
“Claims payment remains the crescendo of all our activities. Operations, we can huff and puff, but if you don’t pay claims, NHIA, we’ve not yet done anything,” she said.
Mrs. Bogobiri noted that the significant progress reflects Executive Management’s commitment, under Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, to strengthen provider confidence and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for NHIS members.
She highlighted several achievements by the Finance and Investment Directorate this year, including:
- Cashless revenue collection system rollout.
- Implementation of a revised Financial Management Manual.
- Capacity-building programmes to improve financial management across the Authority.
The Deputy Chief Executive also disclosed that NHIA secured approval for its 2026 allocation formula on April 10, paving the way for smooth implementation of key programmes and infrastructure projects, including a new office building and car park.
On financial reporting, she announced that the Directorate had cleared outstanding backlogs and submitted the Authority’s 2025 financial statements by the statutory deadline of February 28, 2026. NHIA was ranked sixth among 76 state institutions that submitted audited statements on time, according to the Audit Service. First-quarter statements have been submitted, while second-quarter reports are prepared for submission.
Mrs. Bogobiri assured staff of management’s commitment to welfare, citing prompt payment of salaries and per diems. She urged staff to retire all outstanding imprest, warning that unretired accountable imprest would be recovered from salaries beginning July 10, 2026, in line with directives from the Governing Board and Executive Management.
She further revealed that revised payment workflow approval limits would soon be communicated, and that integration of NHIA’s financial management system with the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) is expected to be completed by year-end to enhance oversight, accountability, and operational efficiency.
