The Deputy Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in charge of Human Resources and Administration, Raphael Segkpeb, has urged staff to be proactive in undertaking routine medical check-ups as part of efforts to safeguard their health and improve workplace productivity.
Speaking at a staff durbar held at the Authority’s Head Office forecourt in Accra, Mr. Segkpeb expressed concern over the rising number of sick leave applications, describing the trend as worrying.
“From where I sit and the number of excuse duties that are coming, people asking for two, three months of sick leave, it is very worrying,” he said.
He encouraged staff to adopt healthier lifestyle practices, including improved dietary habits, regular exercise, and routine monitoring of blood sugar and blood pressure levels.
Mr. Segkpeb disclosed that the Authority was exploring the possibility of expanding medical check-up services nationwide, subject to resource availability and an agreement with SIC Life for coverage.
“We are hoping that subject to availability of resources and budget lines, maybe we will escalate and increase the scope of check up that was done here and across the country if we are able to reach an agreement with SIC Life,” he explained.
In the interim, he urged staff to take personal responsibility for their health by adopting preventive measures.
Beyond health, Mr. Segkpeb also encouraged staff to subscribe to the Authority’s Credit Union, noting that it provides members with access to soft loans during periods of financial need. He explained that loan applications through the Credit Union are typically processed within 48 hours, compared to longer delays associated with standard salary advance requests.
The durbar formed part of ongoing efforts by NHIA management to strengthen staff welfare and promote a healthier, more resilient workforce.
