National Chief Imam Urges Unity After Eid-Al-Adha Dispute Among Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah

The National Chief Imam of Ghana, Shaikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed deep concern over the confusion that erupted among members of Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah (ASWAJ) during the Eid-Al-Adha celebrations in Accra.

In an official statement issued on June 2, 2026, the Chief Imam described the incident — which reportedly centered on a disagreement over which of the two Deputy National Imams was authorized to lead the festive prayer at the forecourt of Parliament — as a “painful irony” that undermines the sacred purpose of Eid: celebration and reflection.

Dr Sharubutu emphasized that while leadership legitimacy and accountability remain important, such disputes should never overshadow the unity and peace that Islam promotes. He called on all factions within Ahlussunnah to embrace reconciliation, patience, and forgiveness, noting that “the failure of Ahlussunnah will not be judged by the possibility of conflicts among them, but by the impossibility of solutions to the conflicts.”

The Chief Imam further advised that intra-faith harmony should mirror Ghana’s reputation for interfaith peace, urging the youth to respect leadership and uphold Islamic moralism. He cautioned against vulgar language in leadership criticism, stressing that rationality and humility must guide all discourse.

Declaring his readiness to help mediate the dispute through both religious and secular means, Dr Sharubutu reminded the fraternity that resolving the matter is a collective responsibility and civic duty.

He concluded with a Quranic exhortation:

“The believers are but brothers, so make reconciliation between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” (Quran 49:10)

The statement was signed by Dr Mohammed Marzuq Abubakari Azindoo, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam.
