Afenyo-Markin Disowns Fake Social Media Post on Human Sexual Rights Bill

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has categorically distanced himself from a viral social media post attributed to his account, which appeared to criticize Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025.

The post, which bore his name and profile image, claimed that laws criminalising sexual orientation “do not protect society” and instead “make existence a crime.” However, the legislator has dismissed the publication as fake, stressing that his official account had been compromised.

In a statement, Afenyo-Markin described the post as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent his views and sow confusion around the ongoing national debate on the controversial bill. He emphasized that he had not authored the message and urged the public to disregard it.

The Effutu MP further assured his constituents and the wider Ghanaian public that steps were being taken to restore the integrity of his social media platforms. He called on citizens to be vigilant against misinformation, especially on sensitive legislative matters.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, has generated intense debate within Ghana and internationally, with advocates insisting it upholds cultural and moral values, while critics argue it infringes on fundamental human rights. Against this backdrop, the circulation of fake posts attributed to lawmakers has heightened tensions in the public discourse.
