Minority Caucus Backs Presbyterian Church’s Anti-Galamsey Campaign, Calls for Institutionalized Fight

The Minority in Parliament has thrown its weight behind the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s nationwide anti-galamsey initiative, dubbed “The Red Sunday,” describing it as a timely intervention in the fight against illegal mining.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, the Caucus commended the Church for mobilizing its congregations across the country to raise awareness of the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and communities. The Minority emphasized that the campaign reflects a growing national consensus that illegal mining must be tackled beyond partisan lines.

The statement noted that while successive governments have rolled out initiatives such as Operation Vanguard, Galamstop, and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), these efforts have often lacked continuity and independence. It stressed the need for a sustainable institutional framework, backed by Legislative Instruments, to define the mandate, powers, and accountability mechanisms of anti-galamsey operations.

Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, underscored that legal backing would shield the fight against galamsey from political interference and ensure operational consistency across administrations. “We must formalize and structure NAIMOS to guarantee its independence and effectiveness,” he stated.

The Minority Caucus reiterated its commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at protecting Ghana’s natural resources, urging government, civil society, and faith-based organizations to collaborate in building a non-partisan, institutionalized response to the menace.
