The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has provided GH¢132,000 in cash, food items, and sanitation tools to flood victims in Avenor, Circle Neoplan Station, North Kaneshie, and Bubuashie, as part of immediate relief efforts following recent heavy rains that devastated several households in the metropolis.
The support package included GH¢130,000 in direct cash donations to affected communities, GH¢2,000 to a shop owner to vacate a drainway, 31 boxes of cooking oil containing 372 bottles, 120 bags of rice amounting to 600 pieces of 25kg bags, eight wheelbarrows, and eight shovels to aid residents and clean-up activities.
At Avenor, the Mayor presented GH¢50,000, 20 boxes of cooking oil, 300 bags of rice, five wheelbarrows, and five shovels. Circle Neoplan Station received GH¢30,000, four boxes of cooking oil, 75 bags of rice, three wheelbarrows, and three shovels. In North Kaneshie, including Swanlake and Ahonfe Close, Hon. Allotey donated GH¢20,000, four boxes of cooking oil, and 100 bags of rice. At Bubuashie Attico, GH¢30,000, three boxes of cooking oil, and 125 bags of rice were handed over to community leader Stella Yanky on behalf of residents.
Speaking during the presentations, Hon. Allotey explained that the donations were made on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Ernest Adomako, to sympathise with victims and help them cope with the immediate impact of the disaster. He noted that the AMA had deployed compactors and sanitation personnel to assist with clean-up operations and urged residents to desist from dumping refuse into drains, which worsens flooding.
The Mayor assured residents that the Assembly would continue working with community leaders and relevant agencies to clear drains, remove obstructions, and implement measures to reduce flooding. He appealed for unity and cooperation to ensure fair distribution of relief items.
Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei, Assembly Member for Avenor, expressed gratitude to the Mayor, President Mahama, the MP, and the AMA, noting that the rice, cooking oil, cash, and sanitation tools would greatly support affected families and help the community begin recovery.
