Delali Sewoekpor, a representative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, has affirmed that President John Dramani Mahama will not hesitate to discipline any party member found guilty of engaging in illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
During an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, November 3, 2025, Mr. Sewoekpor emphasized that President Mahama maintains a resolute and uncompromising position on illegal mining, irrespective of political ties.
“Pollution may begin locally, but its consequences are felt globally. I am fully confident in President Mahama’s determination to tackle galamsey. If any NDC Member of Parliament is proven to be involved, the President will take decisive action,” he stated.
Mr. Sewoekpor further noted that the President’s strict stance mirrors the sentiments of the Ghanaian public, who are increasingly unwilling to accept lawlessness in the fight against illegal mining. “Ghanaians have reached a point where impunity is no longer tolerated. That’s why the President made it clear to his appointees—regardless of their party affiliation—they are not permitted to hold mining licenses or leases,” he stressed.
He also praised the work of the National Inter-Ministerial Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), highlighting its role as evidence of the government’s dedication to eradicating galamsey.
“When you examine the operations of NAIMOS, it reflects the level of seriousness this administration has shown in addressing illegal mining. Even the NPP should commend President Mahama for his leadership,” Mr. Sewoekpor concluded.
