Ghana Summons South African Envoy Over Xenophobic Incidents

The Government of Ghana has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa in Accra, Mr. Thando Dalamba, following reports of xenophobic attacks and harassment of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in South Africa.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, April 23, 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed deep concern over viral videos showing acts of intimidation against foreign residents. He cited a recent incident in KwaZulu-Natal Province where a Ghanaian national, a legal resident, was confronted and told to “fix his country” before being asked to leave South Africa.

The Minister noted that while no fatalities or injuries have been recorded, tensions appear to be escalating, prompting foreign nationals to remain indoors for safety. He recalled previous xenophobic outbreaks that led to loss of lives and property, stressing the need for swift intervention to prevent recurrence.

Hon. Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s longstanding solidarity with South Africa, referencing the pivotal role played by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana’s support for the anti-apartheid struggle. He described the recent incidents as contrary to the spirit of African unity and peaceful coexistence.

The Ministry said Ghana has lodged a formal protest and urged South African authorities to take immediate measures to protect Ghanaian nationals and ensure accountability for those involved. It assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and will continue engaging relevant authorities to guarantee their safety.
