CSA Urges Universities to Strengthen Cybersecurity After UK Attack

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has cautioned Ghanaian universities to strictly adhere to the Directive for the Protection of Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) following a major cyber-attack on the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

The attack, which compromised sensitive data of approximately 450,000 students and alumni, has underscored the vulnerability of educational institutions worldwide. In a statement, the CSA emphasized that Ghanaian universities undergoing digital transformation must prioritize cybersecurity preparedness to safeguard critical systems and personal information.

Launched in October 2021, the CII Directive provides a regulatory framework for protecting vital digital assets across key sectors. The CSA noted that compliance is essential to prevent similar breaches and to strengthen resilience against growing cyber threats.

“Universities are custodians of sensitive data and must treat cybersecurity as a core responsibility,” the Authority stressed, urging institutions to implement robust safeguards and align with national standards.

The CSA reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to enhance Ghana’s cybersecurity posture, warning that lapses in compliance could expose institutions to severe risks in the evolving digital landscape.
