Ghana and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, following a comprehensive assessment of cooperation and priority areas for 2026.
The meeting, hosted by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also reviewed significant progress achieved in 2025. Acting US Ambassador Rolf Olson led the American delegation.
During the discussions, the US conveyed major news on trade relations: the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Monday — 340 to 54 — to extend the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) by three years. AGOA provides duty-free access to the U.S. market for eligible Sub-Saharan African countries and products. A final endorsement by the Senate is expected shortly.
Officials welcomed the development, noting that the extension will boost Ghana’s garment industry, expand exports, and create more jobs. The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation in governance, trade, and cultural exchange as they look ahead to 2026.
