Security has been heightened at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra ahead of a planned protest by members of the Minority in Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the continued detention of former National Food Buffer Stock Company CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hannan.
Police officers have cordoned off the EOCO premises, erecting barricades and deploying personnel to maintain order and prevent any potential breach by demonstrators.
The protest, scheduled for today, is in response to what party officials describe as the unjustified detention of Mr. Hannan, despite claims that he has satisfied his bail conditions. Mr. Hannan was arrested alongside his wife on June 25 over alleged financial improprieties. While his wife was granted bail set at GH¢30 million, Mr. Hannan’s bail was pegged at GH¢60 million, an amount party officials insist has already been met.
Last Thursday, July 3, a group of NPP supporters gathered at the EOCO premises demanding his release. Today’s demonstration is expected to draw a much larger crowd, including party executives and Minority MPs.
Early Monday morning, armed police officers were seen strengthening security around the facility and setting up physical barriers to prevent access to the compound. Police sources say the deployment is aimed at maintaining public order and safeguarding state property.
NPP Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha confirmed the protest, expressing deep concern over the growing frustration among party supporters. “Though the lawyers advised against picketing, grassroots members are angry. Mr. Hannan has met all his bail conditions, so we are demanding answers,” he said.
Report indicates the presence of Mr. Hannan’s family at EOCO. The family has condemned his continued detention, describing it as politically motivated and unjust.
Party leaders are demanding immediate clarification from EOCO and the Office of the Attorney General. Some demonstrators are also calling for parliamentary intervention.
As tensions mount, the nation’s attention is fixed on how authorities respond to the protest and the broader implications for justice and due process.
