Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi Passes On After Brief Illness

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Honourable Ernest Kumi, has passed away after a short illness, marking a somber moment for Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Details surrounding his passing remain undisclosed, but Parliamentary Affairs but reports says that the late MP was actively engaged in parliamentary duties just last week, making his sudden demise all the more shocking.

Mr. Kumi was serving his first term in Parliament on the ticket of the NPP. His death is said to be a significant blow to the party, as well as to the legislature, where his contributions and legal expertise were gaining recognition.

The late MP had recently made headlines following a legal tussle concerning his eligibility to hold office after the 2024 parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court only weeks ago overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed election results.

Earlier this year in February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found Mr. Kumi guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction which restrained him from presenting himself to be sworn in as Member of Parliament.

The Court subsequently issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing multiple failures to attend sittings and a disregard for judicial authority.
