Task Force Flags Encroachment Threats to Flood Control in Oyarifa and Damfa

The Flood Mitigation Task Force has identified critical environmental infractions in Oyarifa and Damfa as part of ongoing post-flood resilience measures, warning that unauthorised developments are undermining drainage systems and increasing flood risks.

During inspections in Oyarifa, the team observed that a developer had constructed apartments directly over a natural water channel, while other nearby projects had altered the uphill flow of water. Several structures sited across drainage pathways have been marked for demolition to restore proper watercourses.

In the New York area of Oyarifa, the Task Force encountered a retention wall being built to divert water flow. Officials noted that the intervention had worsened flooding in previously unaffected areas, underscoring the dangers posed by unapproved construction on natural drainage patterns.

The team also assessed a critical retention pond at Damfa, where encroachment has significantly reduced the facility’s capacity to contain runoff from the Aburi Hills. The diminished pond size, they warned, has heightened flood risks for surrounding communities.

An official from the GARID Project briefed the Task Force on the situation, outlining the challenges facing the facility and the interventions required to restore its functionality.

Authorities stressed that the inspections form part of government’s broader efforts to tackle the root causes of flooding and strengthen resilience across vulnerable areas.
