President John Mahama has assured the public of his administration’s commitment to fully enforce the recommendations outlined in the investigative report concerning the violent incidents linked to the 2020 and 2024 elections. This includes ensuring fair compensation for all affected individuals.
A release from the Presidency confirmed that the pledge was made during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), headed by its president, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor.
During the meeting, the GJA team raised several pressing issues for the President’s attention and resolution.
“Last week, I received the investigative report on the two incidents. It details and catalogues everyone who was affected by the violence and the circumstances that led to it,” President Mahama stated.
“We have handed it over to the Attorney-General. The Attorney-General will review it and, where necessary, hold people culpable and bring them to book,” he added.
He further explained that the government had instructed the Attorney-General to assess and determine suitable compensation for victims, including bereaved families and those who sustained injuries.
“What is the adequate compensation that we can give to people like that?” he asked.
President Mahama also emphasized that the electoral disturbances had impacted not only civilians and political participants but also media professionals performing their lawful duties.
