Ghana’s small-scale gold mining sector has generated a remarkable $8.06 billion in foreign exchange for the country between January and 15th October 2025, according to new data released by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in collaboration with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
The report, titled Small-Scale Gold Exports by PMMC/GoldBod from January 2025 to 15th October 2025, highlights significant growth in both the volume and value of gold exports over the past three years.

So far in 2025, small-scale gold exporters have shipped 81,719.23 kilograms (approximately 81.7 metric tonnes) of gold, valued at $8,061,353,948.57, surpassing the full-year figures for both 2023 and 2024.
In comparison, Ghana recorded $2.19 billion in 2023 and $4.61 billion in 2024 from the same segment, reflecting a 73 percent year-on-year growth in export value between 2024 and 2025.
The data indicates that May, June, and September 2025 were particularly strong months, with export values exceeding $1 billion each. The highest monthly figure was recorded in May 2025, reaching $1.17 billion from 11,068 kilograms of gold.
GoldBod attributes the surge in export earnings to improved regulatory oversight, enhanced transparency in the gold value chain, and strengthened collaboration between small-scale miners, licensed exporters, and the Ghana Gold Board.
The milestone demonstrates the immense potential of Ghana’s small-scale mining sector when properly formalized and supported. The sector continues to serve as a reliable contributor to Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and rural economic development.
Gold remains Ghana’s leading export commodity, and the small-scale mining industry continues to play a critical role in employment creation and income generation. The latest figures reinforce Ghana’s position as one of the top gold-producing nations in Africa.
With less than three months left in the year, the sector is projected to close 2025 with more than $9 billion in small-scale gold export earnings if the current trend continues.
