Mahama Assures Priority Postings for Free Primary Healthcare Volunteers

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged that health professionals and volunteers who participate in the rollout of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare Programme will be given priority when recruitment opportunities arise.

He explained that the initiative is designed to reward service and encourage more trained health workers to support the early stages of the policy as it expands nationwide.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, April 15, Mr. Mahama indicated that lifestyle changes and preventive health education will form a central part of the programme, alongside treatment and primary care services delivered across health facilities.

According to him, Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds and other primary health facilities will serve as the main points of care, with trained professionals leading administration and service delivery.

“We are going to have a category that we will call health volunteers. These will be national service personnel, nurses, and other paramedics who have finished school and are waiting for posting,” he said.

He disclosed that these volunteers will be deployed to support the Free Primary Healthcare system until they are formally posted, stressing that their contribution will be recognized in future recruitment.

“For those who will volunteer and take part in primary healthcare delivery when it is time for posting, we will give them priority in terms of posting,” he assured.

The Free Primary Healthcare policy will be implemented in 150 districts, with government also planning to distribute about 24,000 pieces of medical equipment nationwide to strengthen basic-level healthcare delivery.
