Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has declared his intention to vie for the party’s national chairmanship in the forthcoming internal elections.
Mr. Afoko, who first assumed the role of NPP National Chairman in April 2014, stated that his decision was the result of “extensive reflection and encouragement” from party faithful and sympathizers advocating for revitalized leadership anchored in the party’s core principles and democratic ethos.
In a statement released on Tuesday, he affirmed that his allegiance to the NPP “has remained steadfast through the years,” and emphasized that “the time has come to contribute once again to the rebuilding and strengthening of our party at this critical juncture.”
During his previous term, Mr. Afoko championed internal restructuring and promoted openness within the party. However, in 2015, he was suspended for what the party termed “conduct inconsistent with the NPP’s constitution.” The suspension, initiated by the National Executive Committee, was subsequently endorsed by the National Council — a decision Mr. Afoko legally contested.
He reiterated his commitment to unity and forward momentum, stating: “My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future — one where our party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.”
Mr. Afoko also mentioned plans to engage with party delegates and the press in the coming weeks to outline his vision, proposals, and leadership approach aimed at steering the NPP “with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose.”
He concluded his statement with a call for collective optimism: “Let us look ahead together, God bless the NPP. God bless our dear country.”
