Court Lifts Arrest Directive After Wontumi Appears

A bench warrant issued earlier today for the apprehension of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and serving as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, was officially withdrawn following his subsequent appearance in court.

The warrant was issued by the Criminal Division of the High Court around 9:40 a.m. after Mr. Wontumi failed to attend when the case was initially called.

However, he and his legal representatives arrived after 10:00 a.m. and submitted a request to the court to revoke the warrant, which was approved at 11:39 a.m.

During the session, Wontumi’s attorney, Andy Appiah-Kubi, explained to the court that they had mistakenly believed the hearing was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. as a case management meeting, rather than the earlier time.

Presiding Judge Audrey Kocuvi-Tay, while granting the request to cancel the warrant, cautioned Wontumi about the importance of timeliness, remarking that if a 9:00 a.m. appearance is required, he should be present by 8:30 a.m.

The case, which involves allegations against Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited for the unauthorized transfer of mineral rights and enabling illegal mining activities in Samreboi, Western Region, has been postponed to November 4, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in Criminal Court 4.

Previously, Wontumi was granted bail amounting to GH¢15,000,000 with three guarantors under stringent conditions, including the surrender of his passport and placement on a travel restriction list.
