Members of Parliament from both sides of the House this afternoon strongly condemned the persistent “no bed syndrome” in public hospitals, following the tragic death of Mr. Charles Amissah on February 6, 2026.
Mr. Amissah reportedly died after being refused emergency treatment by three public hospitals in Greater Accra. Addressing the House, Minority Leader Hon. Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin described the incident as unacceptable, stressing that “emergency care cannot be optional, our hospitals do not have the moral or legal discretion to abandon the dying.”
The Minority Leader called on Parliament to immediately empower the Health Committee to summon the Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Emergency Units of the hospitals involved. He emphasized that accountability and urgent reforms are needed to prevent further loss of lives due to lack of emergency care.
Lawmakers across the political divide echoed the condemnation, urging swift action to address systemic challenges in the health sector and restore public confidence in emergency medical services.
