Speaker Orders Probe Into Circumstances of Patient’s Death

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has directed the Health Committee to conduct further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Charles Amissah, who reportedly died after being denied emergency treatment at three public hospitals in Greater Accra.

Describing the incident as “needless and unacceptable,” the Speaker stressed that such occurrences must not be tolerated in the country’s health system. He called for severe sanctions against persons found culpable, emphasizing that accountability is essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The directive follows a statement by Minority Leader Hon. Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, which condemned the “no bed syndrome” and urged Parliament to empower the Health Committee to summon the Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Emergency Units of the hospitals involved.

The Speaker’s intervention underscores Parliament’s resolve to address systemic challenges in emergency healthcare delivery and ensure that citizens receive timely and adequate medical attention.
