Parliament has adopted the Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) report on the Auditor‑General’s performance audit into the availability and accessibility of fertilizer for smallholder farmers in Ghana.
Presenting the motion, PAC Chairperson Hon. Abena Osei Asare underscored that while fertilizer remains a critical input for boosting agricultural productivity, its supply to smallholder farmers has often been untimely and inadequate due to challenges of availability and accessibility.
The Committee commended the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for its initiative to assess and incorporate fertilizer requirements for different ecological zones and crop types into national planning processes. However, it observed that the Ministry did not ensure that suppliers provided the required blend formulations, thereby limiting the effectiveness of the intervention.
After contributions from both sides of the House, the report was adopted, with Members emphasizing the need for stronger oversight and improved supply mechanisms to support Ghana’s smallholder farmers and enhance food security.
