President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital will be completed and ready for commissioning by November 2027, following an inspection of the project site.
Accompanied by the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the President commended contractors and workers for the steady progress made so far, while urging them to maintain momentum to meet the deadline. He noted that the hospital’s closure had placed significant strain on nearby facilities, making its completion critical to restoring healthcare access in the La area.
President Mahama also outlined plans to repurpose the COVID-era emergency center at Burma Camp to handle urgent cases and reduce treatment delays. He highlighted the government’s broader push toward preventive care, citing the recently launched Free Primary Healthcare initiative as a cornerstone of efforts to improve public health outcomes.
The Health Minister explained that redevelopment of the hospital began in 2020 but faced funding and payment delays. Work resumed fully in 2025 after outstanding issues were resolved. He added that once completed, the hospital will serve over 50,000 residents in La and surrounding communities, significantly strengthening healthcare delivery in the capital.
The La General Hospital project is seen as a major step in addressing healthcare infrastructure gaps and ensuring equitable access to quality medical services across Accra.
