NHIA Offers Free Registration to Flood Victims Amid Cholera Threat

In a swift response to mounting health concerns following recent floods in Accra, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced free registration under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for all affected persons and their dependants.

The initiative, unveiled on July 1 by NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, comes as diarrhoea and cholera cases rise in flood‑hit communities where sanitation systems have collapsed and water sources are contaminated.

“No Ghanaian should be denied access to quality healthcare because of a natural disaster,” Dr. Bampoe stressed, noting that the measure is designed to ensure victims receive timely treatment without financial burden.

The NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate confirmed that the registration drive is part of urgent public health measures to avert a wider outbreak of waterborne diseases. Health experts have warned that stagnant floodwaters and poor sanitation could accelerate the spread of cholera, diarrhoea, and related infections if immediate interventions are not taken.

The announcement underscores government’s broader disaster response efforts, which include emergency medical deployments and sanitation campaigns in affected areas.
