Minority Caucus Condemns NIB’s Handling of Nkansah Case

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly criticized what it describes as “unacceptable conduct of investigations and abuse of power” by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) in its handling of the case involving Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah.

In a statement signed by Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh, the Caucus expressed concern over the manner in which Mr. Nkansah was detained and subjected to searches despite his cooperation with investigators.

“As far as we know, Mr. Ofosu is at an unknown location; and given the manner in which he was reported to have been hurled away, we cannot imagine the ordeal he is undergoing with no recourse to his legal counsel,” the statement read. It added: “This is totally unacceptable in the pursuit of justice. The Minority Caucus therefore calls for an immediate release of Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah.”

The Caucus argued that the actions of the NIB, carried out on the directive of government, were politically motivated and undermined the rule of law. “These excessive and abusive actions are politically targeted and wilfully carried out to cover people who speak out on matters at variance with the activities of the government of the day,” the statement noted.

Beyond the specific case, the Minority urged government to focus on pressing national challenges. “The real essence of governance is to serve the interest of the people. The protracted concerns confronting Ghanaians are the payment of cocoa farmers, unemployment, and the rising cost of living,” the Caucus stressed.

The statement concluded with a call for investigations to be conducted “in a civil and dignified manner” and for government to redirect its attention to addressing the economic hardships facing millions of citizens.
