President John Dramani Mahama has received the report of the Transition Committee on the transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) from the Ministry of Health to the University of Ghana.
The report was presented by the Transitional Management Committee, co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson, a distinguished academic and former Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana. President Mahama assured the Committee that the report would be submitted to Cabinet immediately for final input and implementation.
Expressing appreciation for the Committee’s diligence, the President commended them for completing their mandate and presenting a comprehensive framework. He emphasized the vision behind the UGMC, noting that the hospital was built to serve as a world-class centre of research and learning for the University of Ghana.
“University of Ghana Medical Centre is our highest quaternary medical facility in this country. Indeed, it’s of world-class standard, and we want to see it maintain that standard both in terms of clinical care and in terms of logistics and equipment,” President Mahama stated. He added, “And so we want to find the best path in which we can maintain the hospital at the standard in which it is.”
The Committee’s report recommends a 10-year transition period to fully wean the Centre off government subventions, anchored on performance-based leadership contracts. This approach, according to the Committee, will ensure sustainability while preserving the hospital’s international standards.
The submission of the report marks a significant step toward strengthening the governance and autonomy of the UGMC, positioning it as a flagship institution for advanced medical care, research, and training in Ghana.
