Government to Strengthen Inclusive Education Partnerships with Special Schools

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to inclusive education during a meeting with the leadership of New Horizon Special School.

The delegation, led by board members Ms. Nilla Selormey, Ms. Vicky Wireko-Andoh, and Dr. George Francois, who also serves as Executive Director, was received at the Jubilee House. The institution provides education, vocational training, and employment opportunities for children and adults with special needs.

The Vice President described the engagement as an opportunity to recognize the school’s vital role in supporting marginalized groups and to reaffirm society’s shared responsibility in promoting inclusion.

“When we are equipped with the right tools, understanding, and empathy, we can better appreciate individual differences and respond appropriately,” she said.

She emphasized that differences in ability should never be grounds for exclusion, and called on society to remove barriers that hinder full participation of persons with disabilities.

“One country means making room for everyone, including people with disabilities, whose abilities and contributions manifest in diverse ways,” she added.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang commended the school’s leadership, teachers, and staff for their dedication and sacrifice, noting that their work aligns with the goals of Ghana’s Inclusive Education Policy. She also acknowledged the critical role played by families, caregivers, advocates, and development partners in advancing inclusive education.

She assured that government remains committed to working with institutions like New Horizon Special School to ensure that children with special needs have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
