The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued an official statement clarifying a viral video circulating on social media which allegedly shows firefighters assaulting a civilian.
In a press release dated January 5, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Divisional Officer II Desmond E. Ackah, the Service said it had taken note of the video but stressed that the identity of the individual allegedly assaulted has not yet been established.
According to the GNFS, the incident captured in the video is currently under police investigation, and the Service has pledged its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies to ensure that all facts surrounding the matter are established.
The statement explained that the video depicts an altercation between some firefighters and a suspected thief, who had earlier attacked fire officers with a group of accomplices at the scene of an incident. Management of the Service has since set up an internal committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the confrontation.
While condemning any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians, the GNFS also strongly denounced attacks on its personnel, noting that provocation does not justify violence from either side.
The Service appealed to the public to remain calm and exercise restraint as investigations continue, assuring Ghanaians of its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the discharge of its mandate.
GNFS further indicated that it will continue to cooperate with the media and relevant authorities to ensure accurate public information, adding that further updates on the matter will be communicated as necessary.
