GNFS Extinguishes Major Fire at Kasoa New Market, No Casualties Recorded

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained and extinguished a major fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market after hours of intense firefighting on Sunday, 4 January 2026.

The Service received the distress call at 16:50 hours, with the first tender from Kasoa Fire Station arriving just eight minutes later to confront the blaze, which had already reached an advanced stage. Reinforcements were quickly deployed from Weija, Anyaa, Dansoman, Industrial Area, Flagstaff House, Madina, and Swedru Fire Stations, bringing the total response to eight fire engines—six from Greater Accra and two from the Central Region.

The fire was confined at 18:52 hours, brought under control at 19:52 hours, and fully extinguished by 10:00 hours the following morning. No casualties were reported.

Several metallic shops, wooden stalls, and their contents—including maize, beans, shea butter, spices, and other merchandise—were destroyed. However, GNFS personnel managed to salvage thousands of container shops and stalls, preventing a total market loss.

Firefighting efforts were hampered by poor accessibility within the market, long distances to water sources, and public obstruction of firefighters during operations.

This marks the second fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market in two years, though at different locations. Senior GNFS officers, including Director of Operations DCFO Roberta Aggrey Ghanson, Deputy Operations Officer ACFO II Osmond Anum, Greater Accra Regional Commander ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, and his Deputy ACFO II Osei Owusu, were present to provide operational support.

Fire tenders from Kasoa and Swedru remain on standby to prevent any possible re-ignition, while investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
