Ghana Reaffirms Commitment To Media Freedom At Paris Peace Forum

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to media freedom and the promotion of credible, independent journalism on the global stage.

Speaking at the closing session of the 2025 Paris Peace Forum, which focused on Information Integrity and Independent Media, President Mahama underscored the importance of safeguarding press freedom as a cornerstone of democratic governance.

The high-level session, which brought together world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, centred on the future of information integrity and global democracy. President Mahama used the platform to highlight Ghana’s leadership on the African continent in advancing press freedom and supporting institutions that uphold journalistic integrity.

“Ghana is already a leader in promoting press freedom and supporting credible, independent journalism,” President Mahama stated. “We remain committed to strengthening the media landscape and ensuring that journalists operate in an environment free from fear or favour.”

In a significant move, Ghana announced its full membership in the Partnership for Information and Democracy and pledged support for the International Fund for Public Interest Media. These steps, according to the President, are further testament to Ghana’s resolve to uphold the rule of law, deepen democratic values, and serve as a beacon of good governance in Africa.

President Mahama also called for global solidarity in defending the integrity of information. He stressed the need to support journalists and institutions that champion accountability, and urged digital and AI platforms to embrace transparency and ethical responsibility.

“We must continue to support journalists and institutions that stand for integrity and accountability,” he said. “It is imperative that we strengthen international cooperation to protect information as a shared global asset.”

The President’s remarks have been widely welcomed by media stakeholders and civil society organizations, who see Ghana’s renewed commitment as a positive step towards consolidating democratic gains and fostering a resilient information ecosystem.

The Paris Peace Forum, now in its eighth edition, continues to serve as a platform for dialogue and action on global governance challenges, with this year’s focus on the critical role of information in sustaining democracy.
