The Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Dr. Mantas Adomėnas, has paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson, to discuss ways of strengthening democratic governance.
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister noted that democracy is increasingly being tested both globally and within the sub-region. He emphasized that despite these challenges, Ghana has sustained its democratic credentials in a complex regional environment. He further highlighted the importance of involving and empowering the youth in governance and decision-making processes to ensure democracy’s sustainability in Africa.
Dr. Adomėnas expressed appreciation for the audience and provided an overview of the Community of Democracies, which was established 25 years ago following the Warsaw Declaration to promote and strengthen democratic governance. He voiced concern about the growing backsliding of democratic principles worldwide and stressed the need to renew the democratic narrative to address emerging challenges such as disinformation and misinformation.
The Secretary General also underscored the importance of electoral integrity, inclusiveness within multilateral organisations, and adapting democratic governance to contemporary global realities. He highlighted women’s empowerment as a critical pillar in strengthening democratic systems.
Dr. Adomėnas reaffirmed the Community’s interest in deepening cooperation with Ghana, describing the country as “a beacon of democracy.”
The meeting concluded with assurances from both sides to strengthen collaboration in promoting democratic governance and advancing shared values.
