In a groundbreaking diplomatic move, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was granted rare access to a highly fortified Ukrainian security camp where prisoners of war are being detained. The visit marks the first time an African Foreign Minister has been allowed into such a facility.
During his mission, Mr. Ablakwa met with two Ghanaian nationals currently held as prisoners of war. He expressed gratitude to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for approving his unusual request, noting that the gesture underscored the cordial relations between Ghana and Ukraine.
“I can confirm that our citizens are alive and well. Their rights under international law have been commendably respected by Ukrainian authorities,” Mr. Ablakwa stated. He emphasized that the visit strengthened his confidence in ongoing negotiations for their eventual release.
The Minister revealed that the two detainees, whose identities remain concealed for security reasons, voiced their determination to transform their ordeal into advocacy. They pledged to dedicate their lives to educating vulnerable Africans about the dangers of trafficking networks and to help prevent others from falling into similar predicaments.
Mr. Ablakwa described the encounter as both reassuring and inspiring, adding that the cooperation extended by Ukrainian authorities was a significant diplomatic milestone. “I am immensely grateful that our request was not declined. This affirmation of our bilateral ties gives me hope that our efforts will yield positive outcomes,” he said.
The visit is expected to bolster Ghana’s diplomatic push for the safe return of its citizens while highlighting the broader fight against human trafficking across Africa.
