The Ghana Armed Forces College of Nursing and Midwifery (GAFCONM) at the 37 Military Hospital has held a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a four-storey ultra-modern lecture block, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s expansion drive.
The ceremony, held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, was led by the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshall Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, assisted by the President of the National Defence University (NDU), Air Vice Marshall Dr. Felix Adom Asante. The project is expected to be completed within a year.
Acting Principal of the College, Major Bright Atta Addae, described the initiative as more than a physical development, noting it represents a foundation for distinction, discipline, and the future of healthcare provision within the Ghana Armed Forces. He emphasized that the facility would symbolize academic excellence, accreditation readiness, and enhanced teaching, simulation, and research capacity, aligning with standards set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
Major Addae underscored the rising demand for advanced healthcare, stressing the need for nurses and midwives to be clinically capable, technologically proficient, disciplined, and internationally competitive. “Infrastructure alone does not create excellence but must be matched with discipline, dedication and accountability. We are not just building but practicing a legacy of competence, service and military precision in healthcare training,” he said.
Contractor Mr. Reindorf Ameh Mensah, representing God’s Favour Ameh and Sons Limited, disclosed that the edifice will house five classrooms with a capacity of 1,000 students, a library, eleven offices, a reception, washrooms, a skills laboratory, and a lift to ensure disability access.
The event was attended by senior officers, faculty, and staff of GAFCONM, including Brigadier General Richard Naab, Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Brigadier General Clement Laryea, Acting Director General Medical and Dental of the Ghana Armed Forces Health Services and Head of Department Medical Division of the GAF Critical Care and Emergency Hospital.
